The earliest of the poems found in the book is really what started this whole journey back in March/April 2020, during the first COVID lockdown in the Netherlands. It was when I got serious about poetry, and it became a way for me to communicate with a world that had largely fallen silent. Poetry had always seemed to me a nebulous sort of thing – full of riddles and symbols and mysteries, but with the feedback and encouragement I got on this first poem, I realised writing poetry was something I could do, and that there was a desire for my voice in the world. And this gradually grew to become the book Murmurations, which consists of 52 poems and 5 photographs. About half of the poems in the book have never been published before, so even if you are very familiar with my work, you’ll find plenty of new discoveries between its pages.

It has taken a lot of hard work to get to where I am today, and I don’t just mean writing. To get to the point that I am comfortable putting this book out into the world, to I trust that I have something valuable to share, to overcome that persistent inner critic has maybe been the harder part. But today I am happy and proud, and of course still a little anxious. And I hope and trust that this is only the beginning of a long career as a published author.
